Botox Treatment

Botox treatment does not require sedation or local anaesthetic. Tiny needles are used so any discomfort is minimal and short-lived. In most cases the treatment takes 15-20 minutes. You can drive home or return to work immediately after treatment. Exercise should be avoided for the next four hours and the area should not be rubbed or massaged for 24 hours. It is advisable to wait 48 hours before flying.

It takes 3-4 days for the injections to begin to take effect and 7-10 days for the full effect. You are advised to attend for a review 2-3 weeks after the first treatment.

What Are The Limitations Of Botox?

Botox is best suited for treating dynamic facial lines i.e. those caused by facial muscular activity. It will not improve wrinkles and lines that are due to sun-damage and aging. Dermal fillers are best suited for these lines. Often a combination of Botox and dermal fillers is used to achieve the optimum effect.

Botox is a temporary treatment, lasting from three to six months. However, with repeated treatments the effects may last longer.

Who Is Suitable For Botox?

Facial lines and wrinkles can affect not only your appearance but also your self esteem. By smoothing out the lines Botox can help you restore your confidence by giving you a more youthful, less stressed expression. Both men and women can benefit from the results of this treatment.

Who Is Not Suitable For Botox?

Anyone who is pregnant, breast feeding or suffering from neuromuscular disorders, Bell's palsy or blood coagulation disorders, is not suitable for treatment with Botox.

It is very important that you disclose any medications that you are taking on your Medical History Questionnaire.

Certain drugs may interact with Botox, such as aminoglycoside antibiotics (gentamycin, streptomycin, neomycin), anti-malarials, immunosuppressants, aspirin, anti-inflammatories, Gingko Biloba and St John's Wort.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Botox has been used for over 20 years to treat facial wrinkles and its safety and efficacy has been shown in many clinical trials. There have been no long-term side effects reported from the use of Botox.

Temporary adverse side effects may arise from the treatment. Occasionally a small bruise may occur at the injection site which can be covered with make-up. In rare circumstances patients may experience heaviness or drooping of the eyebrow or eyelid which may last for a few weeks. However, prior to your treatment the risk of this occurring will be carefully assessed and the treatment adjusted accordingly.
