What Is The Treatment Like?
An anaesthetic cream is applied to the area prior to the treatment so that any discomfort is minimal. For lip treatments, an anaesthetic infiltration is given which is similar to a dental injection. The filler is then injected with a very fine needle under the skin surface.
After the treatment the area may be slightly red and swollen. This is particularly so with the lips. However, you can resume normal activities and drive yourself home or return to work immediately after the treatment. Vigorous exercise should be avoided for 24 hours.
How Long Will The Effects Last?
This depends upon the type of filler used and the structure of your skin. Factors such as lifestyle, age and the degree of perfection sought by the individual will also influence the life of the filler. Hyaluronic acid products such as Restylane® usually last 6-12 months. Additional touch-ups can be performed at any time after the initial treatment.
Who Is Not Suitable For Treatment?
This treatment is not advised for pregnant and breast feeding women. If you have a history of cold sores in the area to be treated an anti-herpes medicine will be prescribed before and after the treatment to reduce the likelihood of an outbreak of cold sores.
Are There Any Side Effects?
Injection related reactions. These may include swelling, redness, discomfort and bruising at the injection site immediately after the treatment. These reactions are usually mild and resolve within a few days.
Allergic reaction. The risk of an allergic reaction is extremely rare and they are usually self-limiting. Allergic reactions can be treated with corticosteroids or the product removed using an injectable enzyme.
Infection. As with all injections, there is risk of infection. The syringe is sterile and the standard precautions associated with using injectable materials are taken.
